We are governed by a Board consisting of a maximum of 14 directors nominated by the Government of Canada (2), the Province of Nova Scotia (1), Halifax Regional Municipality (4), Halifax Chamber of Commerce (3), and HIAA’s Board of Directors (4). Directors serve terms of up to three years and are eligible for re-election to a maximum of nine years. However, at any given time, by a vote of the Board, one director’s term can be extended for three years, to a maximum total of 12 years.

Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA) is seeking an individual with Aviation/Air Transportation Industry Experience to join its Board of Directors.

HIAA operates Halifax Stanfield International Airport (Halifax Stanfield), the largest, full-service airport in Atlantic Canada, connecting passengers and cargo to destinations around the world, providing 24/7 operations including Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) services, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection preclearance services. Halifax Stanfield contributes over $4.2 billion annually to the Nova Scotia economy; serves approximately 4.0 million passengers each year; and processes over 39,000 metric tonnes of cargo annually. A recognized innovator in the global airport industry, Halifax Stanfield is consistently ranked among the best airports in the world.

The HIAA Board of Directors is responsible for the stewardship of HIAA, overseeing governance and strategic direction. The Board also oversees management, who are responsible for the day-to-day conduct of the business, with the fundamental objective of ensuring that HIAA meets its obligations and operates in a safe, efficient and responsible manner.

Members of the Board of Directors are nominated by Halifax Regional Municipality, Province of Nova Scotia, Government of Canada, Halifax Chamber of Commerce and the Board itself. The current vacancy will be filled as an HIAA Board nominee. Among other skills and experience, directors are expected to collectively have knowledge of business; aviation/air transportation; legal & corporate governance; finance; land development/investment management; strategic planning; stakeholder relations; and sustainability & ESG. For this vacancy, HIAA is specifically seeking a director with aviation/air transportation experience, which may include aviation, airlines, international airports, operations and maintenance, development, cargo and logistics, and other modes of international passenger and cargo movement. Experience as a commercial airline pilot is an asset.

PLEASE NOTE: Directors must: (i) be at least 18 years of age; (ii) subject to limited exception, be a Canadian citizen and a resident of Nova Scotia; (iii) not be employed by or provide services on a full-time basis under contract to any federal, provincial or municipal government department or agency. Directors must also comply with HIAA Conflict of Interest Guidelines.
