  • International Connections Facility

Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA) is currently constructing an International Connections Facility (ICF), coming soon in 2025! This facility will greatly enhance Halifax Stanfield’s capabilities and efficiency, benefiting both passenger and cargo operations.

    About the Project

The ICF is being constructed where international arriving travellers are processed. This new area will include a second level, which will allow international passengers to connect to domestic flights without having to exit customs and collect their baggage. This will not only enhance the travel experience, but give passengers more time to relax and enjoy the airport’s dining and shopping options! Thanks to the generous support of Transport Canada and the Government of Nova Scotia, we will see this expansion come to life in 2025.

International passengers staying in Halifax as their final destination will continue to go through customs and exit to collect their bags as they have in the past.

    Project Benefits

Passenger Experience: The ICF will increase efficiency for connecting passengers transiting from international to domestic flights, allowing for shorter connection times and quicker flight turn-around times in Halifax.

Increased Cargo Capacity: The new facility will result in additional cargo hold capacity, known as “aircraft belly capacity”, increasing the movement of goods between Nova Scotia and international markets.

Economic Growth and Global Connectivity: Regional economic growth will be accelerated by attracting incremental non-stop destinations and capacity. Additionally, once construction is complete and the additional passenger and cargo capacity is fully realized, the total economic benefit for the region is estimated to be $800 million, including more than 4,000 additional direct and indirect jobs in various parts of the supply chain.

Environmental Improvements: Expanding non-stop destinations served from Halifax will provide a favourable impact on the environment, as flying cargo directly out of Halifax will produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to trucking it to other airports for export. By 2035, this project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 11 per cent each year.

    Our Commitment

We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has helped make this project a reality. Together, we are building better airport connections, and ensuring safe and efficient travel experiences for all.

Please stay tuned for more updates as we continue to work towards the completion of this transformative project.
