Yesterday, Halifax Stanfield celebrated Swoop’s debut, with the airline’s inaugural flight to John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport (YHM). Swoop is an ultra low-cost Canadian (ULCC) carrier, owned by WestJet, flying Boeing 737-800 aircraft with 189 seats and attractive one-way fares starting at $99.

“We welcome Swoop to our community as they begin service here at Halifax Stanfield,” says Bert van der Stege, CCO of Halifax Stanfield International Airport Authority (HIAA). “Experience has shown that low fares stimulate demand and provide travellers with more options, while fostering visitation to our beautiful region.”

“I am honoured to have joined Swoop’s first Atlantic Canada bound travellers and to be part of the Swoop movement of bringing more affordable air travel more often to Canadians,” says Michael Claeren, Senior Leader Revenue Management & Pricing for Swoop.

Speaking at Swoop’s inaugural flight celebrations, HIAA’s Director of Air Service Development, Jo-Anne McLean, stated, “With its lower price point, the introduction of Swoop at the start of the summer travel season provides a wonderful opportunity for family and friends to connect from coast-to-coast.”

Other low-cost carriers operating at Halifax Stanfield include Air Canada Rouge to Calgary and Flair Air to Hamilton. Canada Jetlines previously announced it has selected Halifax as its eastern base of operations when it begins service, planned for 2019.
