    Halifax Stanfield is pleased to launch a new accessibility service to help remove barriers with Aira. Aira is an app that provides on-demand, remote visual interpretation services for the blind and low-vision community.

    This app service (in combination with a smartphone), allows you to connect to Aira-trained professionals for on-demand assistance to visual information to help you navigate the airport with confidence.

    What is Aira? 

    Aira is an accessibility feature that provides free on-demand, remote visual interpretation service for the blind and low-vision communities, using technology and human assistance through the app. Connect with Aira using your smartphone or video-equipped smart glasses that can connect to Aira’s iOS or Android App.

    Once downloaded, app users will be prompted to create a free account to connect with Aira’s trained professionals, who will provide on-demand, personalized access to visual information. 

    Please note that Aira does not replace air carrier processes for accessibility assistance. It provides an additional layer of support for people with visual disabilities. Aira agents require travellers and airport visitors with sight loss to always have their mobility device (white cane or service animal) with them.

    How does Aira work? 

    To get started, make sure to download the Aira App on your smartphone. Users can connect to either cellular or Wi-Fi connections to begin their journey with Aira.

    1. Download the Aira Explorer app on Google Play or the Apple App Store. 
    2. Once installed, select the prompt “Tap to use Aira as a Guest for FREE!”  
    3. Create an account using either your email or phone number. 
    4. You will receive a confirmation text message to confirm your phone number. 
    5. Follow the link in the confirmation message to complete your account registration. 
    6. Simply connect with Aira’s live interpreters by tapping the phone icon in the app.
