Halifax Public Libraries and Halifax Stanfield Unveil New Book Kiosks

Books now boarding! A new partnership is taking Halifax Public Libraries to unexpected places—Halifax Stanfield International Airport. Starting June 20, two library kiosks are bringing the Library’s collection to travelers, local residents, and airport staff.

“We are reaching beyond out walls, bringing our services to where our community gathers,” says Åsa Kachan, Chief Librarian and CEO for Halifax Public Libraries. “Whether it’s on the beach or boardwalk, or alongside the Mobile Food Market, expect to see us all over the Halifax municipality. Today, we are excited about being the latest arrival at Halifax Stanfield.”

“Halifax Stanfield is well known for its hospitality and is consistently ranked among the best airports in the world,” says Joyce Carter, President and CEO of Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA). “We are committed to offering exceptional facilities and services for our passengers, employees, and the local community.”

With a shared vision of creating connections to the community, the Library and Halifax Stanfield are leveraging technology to provide innovative customer service. All visitors to the airport can access a kiosk and borrow a book with a library card.

“A big part of our commitment to customer service is utilizing the latest and greatest technology available,” says Brian LeBlanc, Senior Manager of Information Technology for HIAA, who spearheaded this initiative at the airport. “Offering library books in a unique way fits well with our innovative initiatives.”

“The library kiosk is easy to use and allows us to extend the reach of our collection,” says Dave MacNeil, Manager of Collections and Access for Halifax Public Libraries. “The kiosks are like a fridge. You open the door, see what you like, take it out, and enjoy.”
